Today I was able to go back to Kori’s class and teach a reading lesson. You can see the math activities that we did in her class last week HERE! They are doing a whole pizza themed week to learn about fractions. I saw her posts all over instagram, and just knew that I wanted to do something with pizza!
Oddly enough, I didn’t have any good pizza books on hand, but that’s okay! {I’ve since ordered a bunch so I’m never in this situation again, ha!} I decided we would use a LOVE-themed book for Valentine’s Day and then tie the pizza theme into our lesson.
We talked about how a story is a lot like a juicy slice of pizza. It is made of a bunch of elements that are really quite delicious when put together! We read Love is My Favorite Thing to get us started!

Then students got into groups of three. I gave each group a half-sheet of poster board with a slice of pizza drawn on it. They colored the crust and cheese. Then, we used the pizza toppings to write the story elements!
The groups built their pizzas cooperatively while discussing the story elements.
After students were finished working with their groups, we talked about how the character changed throughout the story. We made a Tasty Traits pizza slice to describe the character throughout the story.
Under each flap, students wrote character traits to describe the character during that part of the story.
We had so much fun! I also found these little aprons that I just had to take to the class. They were pretty precious little chefs 🙂
Check out Kori’s instagram to see the other pizza activities they are doing! She transformed her room using red butcher paper, red tablecloths, inflatable pizza floats, and kitchen tools!
You can also check out the pizza fraction activities that she used HERE!

I think this is a very creative way to break a part a book and also make it fun for kids. Whatever theme is going in the classroom, you can tie into a book or project. Rather than just handing the students a boring worksheet to write the stroy elements on, handing them a “slice of pizza” will get the students more engaged and excited about learning. I absolutely love this idea!!
Thank you!
