Today I had the privilege to teach a math lesson in Kori’s 2nd Grade class. She told me that they were working on Division… I had just ordered a Zombie book from amazon… so a lesson idea was born! I didn’t have time to snap pictures during class, but let me show you what we did!
First, we read Zombie in Love (amazon affiliate link). This book is PRECIOUS. It has NOTHING to do with math, but that’s okay! The students really enjoyed our read aloud and then we tied zombies into our math lesson!
After reading our story, we solved zombie division problems with zombie cards and brains ;). I cut Twizzlers up into small pieces so that we could use them as our math manipulatives. Students acted out the word problem with their zombies and brains!
We didn’t use the recording sheet because we did this together during our minilesson, but they could have also shown their work after acting it out!
After we did several problems together and divided lots of brains into equal groups, we made our very own zombies! Students created a division situation with hearts (equal groups) and brains (objects to divide out). Then, students used their word problem stem to write about their division situation! Kori was so sweet to send me a picture of a few since I forgot! I love seeing all the personal details on the zombies!
This can also be done with multiplication! Students solve the multiplication problems with their zombies and brains!
Does it get much more fun than working with yummy brains during math???!!!
Here’s how the zombie craft can be used with multiplication as well! You can also replace the hearts with circles if you are reading a different zombie book!
